International Medical Graduates
General information for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
To work as a Medical Officer in Australia you will require registration with the Australian Medical Council (AMC). You must also be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of the state in which you wish to work.
By national agreement, all the Medical Boards of Australian States and Territories have introduced consistent assessment and registration pathways for International Medical Graduates in addition to the existing Australian Medical Council (AMC) examination pathway.
The assessment and registration pathways for new applicants are as follows:
- Competent Authority Pathway (for those having met certain requirements and graduating from New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada or USA)
- Standard Pathway (requires applicants to have successfully passed the Australian Medical Council Multi Choice Examination (AMC MCQs) and to have completed a period of supervised practice)
- Specialist Pathway (overseas trained specialists can apply for recognition or assessment of their specialist qualifications through the Australian Medical Council and the relevant specialist college)
- On all pathways, applicants are required to comply with National English Language and Primary Source Verification requirements
- National Policy on English Language Proficiency Requirements for International Medical Graduates
- Verification - primary source verification of medical qualifications(EICS verification)
- General registration - Doctors who have obtained their primary medical degree from Australia or New Zealand are eligible for general registration in all states of Australia.
Overseas trained doctors from outside these two countries may be eligible for general registration once they have passed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exams and completed a period of supervised practice.
